Climbing God's Ladder: The wines of Priorat, Mont Sant and Terra Alta
Trace back the history of many great wine regions and you’ll find religion playing a crucial role in their foundation. We can thank the monks in medieval times for turning innocuous looking hillsides into legendary vineyard locations. Centuries later, their patient, painstaking legacy remains, with profound wines forged out of ancient vines in inhospitable places like the sacred mountain of Mont Sant in Catalonia, Spain. There is a winery there called Scala Dei or ‘Ladder of God’, which is testament to the breath-taking steep terraced slopes where the grapes ripen in the ferocious Spanish sun.
Not so long ago, this spectacular and unique region in North East Spain was relatively unknown. Now, amidst the heat and dust it boasts some of Spain’s most revered and celebrated wines. Priorat is the big daddy of the three wine regions we’ll be exploring and is renowned for its intense, full-throttle Garnacha-based red wines, but next door Montsant and nearby Terra Alta are also packed full of vinous treats of all colours to delight Spanish wine aficionados and wine lovers in general.
